Jesse L. Martin Leaving 'Law & Order'

The actor is exiting the drama series he called home for the past nine years, and ''K-Ville'' star Anthony Anderson is in talks to fill the void

JESSE L. MARTIN The actor is exiting Dick Wolf's NBC series and will next play Marvin Gaye in the biopic ''Sexual Healing''
Will Hart

(FROM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) – After months of speculation, it is now official that Jesse L. Martin is leaving NBC's Law & Order after nine years on the show. Sources say his character, Detective Ed Green, will be written off. In the wake of Martin's departure, Anthony Anderson, star of Fox's freshman cop drama K-Ville, is in final talks to come on board as a new detective partnered with Jeremy Sisto's Cyrus Lupo. Martin is expected to shoot one more episode with Anderson stepping in later this season. Although Fox has never officially pulled the plug on K-Ville, Anderson's casting in Law & Order pretty much makes that a done deal. Martin recently finished work on the feature Peter and Vandy, and will next play Marvin Gaye in the indie biopic Sexual Healing, which also stars James Gandolfini. (Hollywood Reporter)

You might remember Anthony Anderson--he was the heavy-set black guy who stepped in for Mariska Hargitay's character while she was on maternity leave. He and Chris Meloni's character came to blows, remember? Not sure if he's playing the same irritating (!) character...

I always said they never should have moved it from Wednesday!!
From today's USA TODAY article on the Nielsens:

Law orderly. The two-hour 18th-season premiere of NBC's Law & Order Wednesday arrested 13.5 million viewers, its best numbers since May 2006, the show's last airing on that night before being banished to Fridays.

The original "Law & Order" series returns tonight to NBC at 9:00 p.m. EST/8:00 p.m. CST, in a splashy two-hour, two-episode premiere, complete with new cast members and longtime cast member Sam Waterston's ADA character getting a promotion. Because of scheduling differences, Waterston's Jack McCoy was already seen in his new role as District Attorney of Manhattan in an episode of series spin-off, "Law & Order: SVU."  But tonight we get a real introduction to McCoy's new leadership position.

Quoted in a couple of reviews of the episodes:

The new ADA walks into the DA's office and says, "Branch used to fill these shelves with knickknacks and awards."

"It's a working office now," McCoy responds, "not a showroom."

Reviews differ.

USA TODAY's Robert Bianco liked it a lot.

Chicago Sun-Times sourpuss Doug Elfman wasn't impressed.

If Law and Order was a virus...
...we'd all be sick! Right here, in Chi-town, between the cable and local channels, there are no fewer than FOUR "Law and Order" shows on right now, simultaneously!

Local channel -- Law & Order: SVU (Russian Love Poem, 1999)

USA -- Law & Order: SVU (Savant, 2007)

TNT -- Law & Order: Trial by Jury (Skeleton, 2005)
* Airing because it's the conclusion of the "Law & Order" two-parter that let Jesse L. Martin take time off from the show in order to make the film version of "Rent"

Bravo -- Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Mis-Labeled, 2004)

Jeremy Sisto joining--but as a detective
So we still don't know what's going on with the legal department; is Alana De La Garza's ADA Connie Rubirosa going to be promoted to Jack's old job as Executive ADA (highly doubtful!) or is a new Executive ADA going to be cast? And if so, who??

What would be really cool is if they brought in Richard Brooks to be the new Executive ADA--if for no other reason than to bring back a founding cast member for its upcoming record-breaking season!

In Today's Casting News: A New L&O Cop, a Heroes Mutant

From TVGuide.com -

After guesting as a lawyer in the season finale of Law & Order, Six Feet Under alum Jeremy Sisto is returning to the series this fall as a regular, but this time as a new character, a detective who it's speculated will replace Milena Govich....

[You might also know Jeremy Sisto from when he played Elton in Clueless, or when he played, well, Jesus, in the 1999 Jesus NBC miniseries--!]

'Tis official: New York District Attorney Jack McCoy!

New Law & Order DA Predicts "Fireworks"

Sam Waterston has officially been "promoted" to New York District Attorney on Law & Order, as longtime prosecutor Jack McCoy fills the vacancy dictated by possible presidential candidate Fred Thompson's exit from the role of Arthur Branch. Though he may, as a result, see less screen time, Waterson puts the best spin on the sitch, saying that while the career move is "a logical step" for McCoy, "politics isn't his game." As such, "There'll be fireworks," the actor predicts. "I'm looking forward to it."

S.O.S. Save Our Shows 2007!/USA TODAY article: Will 'Law & Order' lose its appeal?
This April 11, 2007 article USA TODAY talks about how NBC has yet to renew both "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," among other shows. It's still early-ish yet, so one or both could still be renewed, but it is a troubling sign that renewal decisions are still forthcoming. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" was renewed earlier. You can take the USA TODAY online survey to vote on whether the shows should be saved!

Will 'Law & Order' lose its appeal?
By Gary Levin, USA TODAY

For years, Law & Order — on the air since 1990 — has been chasing the record held by CBS' Gunsmoke, which ran for 20 years to become TV's longest-lasting drama.

But NBC might deny it that chance. For the first time, the crime show's future is uncertain. It hangs between renewal and cancellation — "on the bubble," in industry jargon — because of sagging ratings. The show is averaging 9.2 million viewers this season, less than half the audience it had five years ago as a top-10 show.

Blame normal declines among aging series, a glut of procedural crime dramas and the show's banishment to Fridays this season from its longtime Wednesday home. Whatever the cause, it has earned Law and its never-quite-a-hit spinoff, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, spots on the list of 22 shows fighting for survival.

The major networks will announce their fall lineups in mid-May, and with them, a death sentence or reprieve for these shows. USA TODAY's 10th annual Save Our Shows survey asks viewers to weigh in on which deserve another season and which should be put out to pasture...

Where does your show stand?

Check our list to see the renewal status of your favorite programs, then vote for the ones that need help.

Also, next week's "Jet" magazine has a brief one-page story on Tamara Tunie, who is one of the producers of the Broadway run of playwright August Wilson's final work, "Radio Golf," along with the play's stars Tonya Pinkins and Harry Lennix (with very much being made of his long-noticed resemblance to Senator Barack Obama in the promotional poster--or it just seems like it!--as the character in the play is running for a political office). The issue features actress Victoria Rowell on the cover with her son Jasper. Rowell has just released the book, The Women Who Raised Me, about her childhood spent in foster care (and it's not mentioned in the article, but Jasper is shaping up to be a dead ringer for his father, naturally).

Oh boy, icon post! I apologize for that lack of artistic creativity in this batch. For the most part, the SVU kick had some super dark caps, and it was rather hard getting them bright and crisp. I tried some new coloring with the Vanessa icons, and hopefully you all will enjoy!
